The history of valentines day is quite interesting. The holiday has its roots in ancient Roman culture. Back then, it was customary for people to celebrate Lupercalia on February 15th. This was a festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, and Panacea, the goddess of healing. During this festival, young men would draw the names of young women from a box, and they would be paired up for the festival.
The valentines day we know today does not have much in common with Lupercalia. There are many stories about how valentines day came to be what it is today. One story tells that valentines day is named after Saint Valentine, a Roman priest who was martyred around 270 CE by Claudius II Gothicus. Another story claims that valentine’s day began as an attempt to replace Lupercalia with Christian celebrations of love and affection in part because Pope Gelasius I believed that “Lupercalia… were not worthy of the sacredness of the Christian religion”. Whatever its origins, valentines day is here to stay.
